How does laser hair removal work?
Before starting each Laser Hair Removal session, we assess our client’s skin type and administer the suitable treatment settings for the best possible result without compromising skin safety at any point during the treatment session.
For permanent hair removal on any part of the body, this safe and effective procedure works by utilising the energy of the laser and effectively inhibiting the hair’s ability to regrow through the absorption of the laser energy by the melanin pigment in the hair, and into the hair follicle. The laser also disrupts hairs that are principally in the active growth (anagen) phase at the time of laser treatment.
Laser hair removal works best with darker and courser hair as the hair follicles have a high melanin content. This permanent treatment is generally not recommended for lighter blonde or grey hair as the melanin content is low, meaning it will be mostly unaffected by the laser.
How Many Sessions Do I Need?
The number of sessions required to achieve a permanent result varies person to person and can be affected by many factors including the melanin levels in your hair follicles and the time between each session.
Generally, you will begin to see results within the first four to eight sessions of the laser hair removal treatment. Most clients report 90% hair removal by their eighth session. To ensure the bets results, treatments should be performed every 4 to 6 weeks during the initial stages.
It is important to understand that factors such as hormones, certain medications, as well as genetics can cause hair growth over time. With this, we often advise our clients that hair is greatly reduced and future maintenance treatments may be required, and some of the more stubborn hairs may not be permanently removed over time. You should expect future maintenance treatments anywhere between two to four times per year.

Does laser hair removal suit me?
We recommend all clients to arrange for a consultation prior to undergoing treatments to determine the suitability for Laser Hair Removal. Different skin tones and different hair colours play a part on the effectiveness of the treatment and especially with the results.
Clients with lighter skin with darker hair can generally expect greater success in results due to the greater absorption of the laser, when compared with clients who have darker skin tone and lighter hair.
Lastly, please be advised that Cosmetic Boutique’ Laser Hair Removal services permanently treats existing hairs and cannot prevent future growth that is caused by genetics, age, medication, or imbalanced hormones.

What to expect?
Common things to expect from Laser Hair Removal
- Redness, itchiness, warm skin.
- Follicular Oedema; swelling of the hair follicles in response to heat energy of the laser. They generally look like small red dots which usually appears shortly after treatment (or during) and can resolve from 30 minutes to 72 hours. It is important not to shave until the follicular oedema has resolved, to prevent further irritation to the skin. Follicular oedema creates a lumpy, swollen appearance of the skin and is a normal response post treatment.
- Chaffing/Friction; can occur from wearing tight clothing immediately post treatment.
Less Common
- Hives; use of antihistamine can significantly reduce irritation.
- Hot spots; post treatment ongoing erythema (lasting longer than 72 hours).
- Hyper and hypopigmentation.
- Crusting and swelling of the skin; in the unusual case of crusting, contact Cosmetic Boutique. Do not pick at these areas as this may cause further irritation leading to infection
During Treatment
- Medical Grade Laser Hair Removal treatment is up to 85% effective in most cases and comes with mild-moderate discomfort. Taking an analgesic such as Nurofen prior to treatment may help manage some of the discomfort during treatment.
